Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake is one of my all time favourite novels, so I was very excited to work on the stage design for a recent theatre production.
Carabosse Theatre Company commissioned me to create drawings, which were projection mapped onto the proscenium arch of the theatre.
My aim was to create a frame for the stage set, which reminded the audience of book illustrations. The picture of the castle was projected onto a translucent gauze which hid the stage before the show.
It was thrilling to meet Mervyn’s son, Fabian at the opening night. He came across as a genial man and he was very kind about our efforts. It was wonderful to hear about Mervyn Peake from his own son, as well as talking about Fabian’s own artwork.
